Christine Sun Kim ILY Sticky Hand
Designed by Christine Sun Kim, this ILY Sticky Hand represents the complicated feelings she has for the universally known ASL sign:
"Many people who are not Deaf know the sign for "I Love You" in American Sign Language (ASL). There is even an emoji of it. It's kind of cheesy that the Deaf community is represented by the sign for "ILY"–would you feel comfortable saying "I love you" to strangers? Sometimes it strikes me as infantilizing to represent our community with this phrase. It seems like an oversimplification. The "ILY" sticky hand complicates the use of this sign while representing my feelings on the subject. It slaps you in the face with our "I love you". As the sticky hand gets dirty, fuzzy, and stretched out over time, it becomes a visualization of how this sign/symbol is overused to represent the Deaf community. At the same time, I love my community. I want to smack you with my love." - Christine Sun Kim.
These are only suitable for adults.
